Story

Synopsis

Hei is a small cat spirit displaced when humans destroy his forest home, and he falls in with a group of fellow spirits who believe humanity has taken too much. Then he's taken in by Wuxian, a powerful human executor who travels with him and quietly demonstrates a different way of looking at the world. The film balances gorgeous, fluid action with a gentle road-trip structure, letting Hei work out for himself whether coexistence is possible or whether his new friends were right about people all along.

Directed by MTJJ and based on his own long-running web series, The Legend of Hei was a landmark moment for Chinese animation, praised internationally for animation quality that stood comfortably alongside Japanese theatrical work. Its expressive, hand-drawn action sequences drew particular acclaim, and the film became a significant commercial and critical success in China.
