Story

Synopsis

Across the vast feudal expanse of the Joker Star System, royal dynasties wage mechanized warfare piloting colossal humanoid combat machines known as Mortar Headds, guided by genetically engineered android partners called Fatimas. Amaterasu, the divine emperor of the Grees Kingdom, travels in mortal disguise as young mecha engineer Ladios Sopp to the desert planet of Addler. There, his longtime mentor Dr. Chrome Ballanche pleads with him to rescue his greatest Fatima creations, Lachesis and Clotho, from the clutches of a corrupt local lord. Sopp must summon the golden Knight of Gold to protect Lachesis.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Sunrise animated this visually magnificent sixty-five-minute science-fiction mecha feature, released in Japanese cinemas in March 1989. Directed by Kazuo Yamazaki and featuring an epic orchestral score by Takashi Asahina, the film adapted the opening story arc of Mamoru Nagano's legendary, intricately detailed manga masterpiece *The Five Star Stories*. Nagano's haute-couture fashion designs, baroque royal court aesthetics, and ornate mechanical draftsmanship were brought to life by master animators Nobuteru Yuuki and Moriyasu Taniguchi. The film remains an enduring cult classic among mecha connoisseurs for its grand mythic worldbuilding.
