Synopsis

In a steampunk nineteenth-century Paris, Noe Archiviste is searching for the Book of Vanitas, a grimoire said to be capable of corrupting vampires by rewriting their true names. He finds it in the hands of Vanitas, a human physician who claims to use it for healing rather than destruction, and who is considerably more theatrical and less trustworthy than his stated mission suggests. The two form an uneasy partnership treating afflicted vampires while Noe narrates from a future in which he apparently kills his partner.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Jun Mochizuki's manga by Bones, The Case Study of Vanitas comes from the creator of Pandora Hearts and shares that work's gothic aesthetic, elaborate costume design, and fondness for withholding information. Its Parisian steampunk setting and its narrative framing device, in which the outcome is announced early and the path there withheld, gave it a distinctive structure. Bones's production was widely praised for its visual richness, particularly in its depiction of period Paris and vampire society. Its Parisian setting and costume design remain among the studio's most visually rich work.
