Story

Synopsis

Directed by Keiichi Hara, this moving contemporary fantasy follows fourth-grade student Koichi Uehara, who lives in suburban Tokyo. While walking along a dry riverbed, Koichi discovers a strange fossilized stone that rehydrates into a living, talking baby kappa, an ancient Japanese mythological water spirit. Naming the creature Coo, Koichi and his family secretly adopt him into their home, learning about the ancient environmental purity of Edo-era Japan. However, Coo's peaceful existence is shattered when intrusive television paparazzi and sensationalist media expose Coo to the public, turning the creature into an exploited celebrity spectacle.

Traumatized by media harassment and the death of his beloved dog companion Ossan who is struck by a car protecting him, Coo flees to the top of Tokyo Tower. Surrounded by helicopters and flashing cameras, Coo prepares to commit suicide to escape human cruelty, mourning his father who was murdered by Edo samurai. Moved by Koichi's desperate pleas and unconditional love, Coo climbs down safely into his arms. Realizing he cannot live in modern Tokyo, Coo is smuggled to a secluded forest in Okinawa by a friendly disguised shape-shifting spirit, living peacefully in wild nature.
