Story

Synopsis

Introverted high school student Mamoru Suzuhara is an avid reader who harbors a secret romantic crush on his neighbor Aya Chiyono. When Aya's strict politician father unexpectedly orders their family to relocate to Tokyo against her wishes, Mamoru gathers his courage and proposes running away together. Accompanied by four classmates, the teenagers barricade themselves inside the derelict Satomi Coal Factory for an innocent week-long camping rebellion. However, discovering Malet, an undocumented Thai child hiding inside the factory from immigration authorities, the students mount a hilarious, tactical war using clever booby-traps to defeat corrupt adults.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio Ajia-do animated this delightful eighty-seven-minute coming-of-age comedy-drama feature, released theatrically in December 2019 by GAGA. Directed by Yuta Murano with scripts written by Ichiro Okouchi, famous for *Code Geass*, the film modernized Osamu Soda's bestselling 1985 youth rebellion novel. Pop star Rie Miyazawa, who starred in the iconic 1988 live-action film adaptation, returned for a special guest voice role. Winning the prestigious Best Animated Feature award at the Annecy-partnered Sitges Film Festival, the film was widely acclaimed for its youthful optimism, contemporary social relevance, and clever defensive traps.
