Synopsis

Cursed by a dying demon while defending his village, Prince Ashitaka journeys west seeking a cure, and finds himself caught in the middle of a brutal war between an industrial mining town and the vengeful spirits of the forest it is destroying. San, a human girl raised by wolf gods, fights fiercely to protect the wilderness, while Lady Eboshi leads her town with genuine compassion for her people even as she wages war on nature itself. Ashitaka refuses to simply pick a side, insisting there must be a way for humans and the forest to survive together, even as the story refuses to promise him he is right.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Mononoke Hime, known internationally as Princess Mononoke, was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, released theatrically in Japan in 1997. It was a massive commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japan at the time of its release, and its unflinching, morally complex take on environmentalism and industrialization set it apart from typical animated fare. Widely regarded as one of Miyazaki's masterpieces, it remains celebrated for refusing easy villains or tidy resolutions, treating both humanity's needs and nature's fury with genuine, uncomfortable respect.
