Synopsis
Chimney Town is an isolated steampunk industrial metropolis choked beneath dense, suffocating plumes of coal smoke, where citizens have never seen the sun or stars. Young chimney sweep Lubicchi endures relentless mockery from local townspeople for believing in his late father's fantastic tales of shining celestial stars above the fog. On Halloween night, Lubicchi encounters Poupelle, a living creature magically animated from discarded junk and scrap metal. Forming a tender friendship, the two outcasts face off against oppressive inquisitor police and dangerous smokestacks, embarking on an audacious quest to clear the sky.

Studio 4°C produced this magnificent 100-minute computer-animated fantasy feature film, released theatrically across Japan by TOHO and Yoshimoto Kogyo in December 2020. Directed by Yusuke Hirota and adapted from the bestselling picture book written by popular Japanese comedian Akihiro Nishino, who served as executive producer and screenwriter, the film achieved major commercial success, earning over 2.7 billion yen. The production received widespread critical acclaim for its hyper-detailed steampunk architecture, dazzling color design, and heartwarming message, earning an Excellence Award at the 2021 Japan Academy Film Prize.
Poupelle Of Chimney Town has plenty of heart, but Studio 4°C’s foray into 3D feels like an unfinished learning curve hobbled by disjointed storytelling.
