Synopsis

Joelle Davidovich Pomponette, known as Pompo, is a wildly successful producer in Nyallywood who specializes in short, loud, commercially reliable entertainment. Gene Fini, her timid assistant, has spent his entire life watching movies and writing about them in a notebook he never shows anyone. When Gene reacts to one of her scripts with genuine passion, Pompo tells him to direct it himself, and the film follows the brutal, exhilarating process of editing a first feature into something that actually works. Every editing decision is treated as a genuine dramatic act with real consequences.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Takayuki Hirao and adapted from Shogo Sugitani's manga, Pompo the Cinephile is essentially a film about editing, treating the assembly of footage as its central dramatic act rather than a technical afterthought. Its enthusiasm for filmmaking as craft, combined with an unusually specific argument about runtime discipline, earned it strong critical reception and a devoted following among viewers who work in film themselves. It remains a frequent recommendation for anyone interested in movies about making movies. Its argument about runtime discipline has been quoted approvingly by working filmmakers since.
