Synopsis

Years after leaving the ruined department store where he met Yumemi, a projection robot who waited decades in an abandoned planetarium for customers who never came, the Junker travels a devastated world carrying what she gave him. Encountering survivors who have never seen a clear sky, he tries to pass on something he barely understands himself. The film continues and concludes a story about obsolete machines, human cruelty, and the persistence of small acts of care in a world that has stopped rewarding them. Every survivor he meets reacts differently to a story about a machine that waited.

Produced by David Production and adapted from Key's visual novel, Storyteller of the Stars concludes the Planetarian story begun in a preceding ONA series. Key is best known for Clannad and Air, and its work consistently pairs everyday warmth with devastating emotional payoffs. Planetarian is unusually compact by the studio's standards, telling a complete story in a short runtime, and it is frequently recommended to viewers who find Key's longer works too slow to reach their emotional core. Its compact runtime delivers a complete emotional arc far more efficiently than the studio's longer works.
