Synopsis

Toua Tokuchi is a gambler first and a pitcher second, and when a struggling professional team recruits him, he negotiates a contract where he earns money for every out and loses money for every run allowed. What follows is less a sports story than a psychological duel, as Tokuchi reads batters, manipulates umpires, and exploits his own team's ownership with the cold precision of someone who genuinely does not care about winning for its own sake. Baseball becomes a game of information and nerve rather than athleticism.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Shinobu Kaitani's manga, the creator of Liar Game, One Outs shares that series' fascination with psychological manipulation and the mechanics of outsmarting opponents rather than overpowering them. Produced by Madhouse, it stands almost entirely apart from typical sports anime, replacing training montages and team camaraderie with something closer to a heist thriller. It remains a cult favorite among viewers who find conventional sports anime formulaic, and it's regularly recommended alongside Kaiji and Akagi as essential viewing for fans of psychological gambling narratives. Its cold, calculating protagonist remains one of the genre's most distinctive leads.
