Synopsis

Takashi Natsume has been able to see yokai his whole life, which cost him friends, homes, and any sense of belonging until he inherited his grandmother Reiko's Book of Friends, a collection of names she took from spirits she defeated. Accompanied by a self-appointed bodyguard in the form of a lucky cat possessed by a powerful yokai, Natsume sets about returning those names one by one. Each encounter becomes a small story about loneliness and connection, and gradually about a boy learning he is allowed to have people.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Yuki Midorikawa's manga by Brain's Base, Natsume's Book of Friends launched one of anime's most enduring gentle supernatural franchises, running for seven seasons plus films and specials over nearly two decades. Its deliberate avoidance of escalating conflict, in favor of small empathetic encounters, is precisely what allowed it to sustain that run without diminishing returns. The series is consistently recommended as a definitive comfort anime and as an example of supernatural storytelling that finds its power in kindness rather than confrontation. Its quiet consistency across two decades is genuinely rare in long-running anime.
