This film brings Takashi Natsume, a boy who can see spirits inherited from his late grandmother, into a story about a fading, temporary connection with a spirit whose time in the world is running out. As always, Natsume's gentle nature draws him into helping wandering yokai find peace, but this particular bond carries an extra weight of impermanence that pushes the story toward quiet melancholy rather than easy resolution. It's a smaller, more intimate entry that leans fully into the franchise's signature bittersweet tone. The story trusts its audience to sit with that sadness rather than rushing past it.

Based on Yuki Midorikawa's long-running manga, Natsume's Book of Friends has built a devoted following over multiple seasons for its warm, low-stakes approach to supernatural storytelling, favoring empathy and quiet emotional payoffs over spectacle. This film, produced amid the franchise's ongoing TV run, gave fans a feature-length dose of that same gentle sensibility, expanding the emotional scope slightly beyond what a single television episode could hold. It's frequently recommended as comfort viewing for fans seeking anime that prioritizes tenderness over conflict. It's a small but meaningful chapter for anyone who has followed Natsume's story from the very beginning.
