Synopsis

Satsuki and Mei move to the countryside with their father while their mother recovers in a nearby hospital, and the younger sister discovers an enormous, sleepy creature living inside a camphor tree. Totoro is not a plot device, and the film has essentially no antagonist, no peril for most of its runtime, and no conventional structure. What it has instead is an extraordinarily attentive portrait of childhood, in which waiting for a bus in the rain qualifies as one of cinema's most memorable sequences. Nothing here needs resolving, and the film is entirely comfortable with that.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, My Neighbor Totoro is Studio Ghibli's most iconic film and the source of its corporate logo, despite performing modestly on its initial theatrical release before becoming a cultural fixture through television and home video. Its portrayal of childhood, rural Japan, and quiet family anxiety about illness has made it one of the most beloved animated films worldwide. Totoro himself became one of the most recognizable characters in animation, and the film routinely appears on lists of the greatest films ever made.
