Synopsis

Directed by Rintaro and written by Katsuhiro Otomo, this dazzling dieselpunk adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's manga is set in the colossal multi-tiered industrial city of Metropolis. Japanese private detective Shunsaku Ban and his young nephew Kenichi arrive in the city to track down rogue scientist Dr. Laughton, who is secretly hired by the totalitarian plutocrat Duke Red to build Tima, a supreme gynoid android resembling Red's deceased daughter. When Duke Red's fanatical anti-robot adopted son Rock burns the laboratory to destroy Tima, Kenichi rescues the amnesiac gynoid girl, fleeing into the impoverished subterranean slums.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Kenichi and Tima form a tender bond as Tima struggles to understand human emotions, but Duke Red captures her to install her atop the Ziggurat, a massive planetary weather-control weapon. Rock shoots Tima, exposing her mechanical circuits and driving her into berserk existential fury. Tima connects to the Ziggurat mainframe, commanding Metropolis's automated robots to wage war against humanity. As the colossal skyscraper crumbles, Kenichi attempts to rescue Tima from the ledge, but her hand slips, falling into the flames while asking if she is human. Kenichi stays behind to rebuild Metropolis.
