Synopsis

Erial, a young woman from the immortal Iolph clan, is torn from her homeland during a violent raid and finds herself raising an orphaned human infant alone in an unfamiliar world. As the years pass and the child grows into adulthood, Erial barely ages at all, forcing her to confront the quiet grief of loving someone whose life will always move faster than her own. The film traces decades of their bond, exploring motherhood, mortality, and the ache of watching someone you love grow old without you.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Mari Okada in her feature directorial debut, with animation by P.A. Works, Maquia earned widespread critical acclaim for its emotionally devastating handling of found family and the passage of time, themes Okada had explored as a writer on many prior anime before finally directing her own original story. It's frequently cited as one of the best original anime films of its decade, praised for balancing fantasy world-building with an intensely personal, tear-jerking core about what it means to raise and eventually let go of a child.
