Story
Synopsis
Lupin III and Jigen discover the money they just stole is counterfeit, tracing it to the tiny nation of Cagliostro, where a count is forcing a young woman named Clarisse into marriage to secure a legendary treasure. What begins as a heist becomes a rescue, and Lupin proves considerably more sentimental than his reputation allows for. Inspector Zenigata pursues throughout, the castle proves architecturally absurd, and the film balances impeccably staged action with a wistfulness that the franchise rarely reaches otherwise. Every set piece is staged with a lightness the franchise rarely achieved again.

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki in his feature film debut, The Castle of Cagliostro established much of the visual language he would carry into Studio Ghibli, including his fondness for aerial action, mechanical detail, and capable young women. Its influence extends well beyond anime, with Steven Spielberg and the Pixar team having cited it directly. Some Lupin purists consider Miyazaki's gentler characterization a departure from the franchise's rougher origins, but the film is nearly universally regarded as its finest hour. Its opening car chase alone has been studied and copied by animators for decades.
