Synopsis

Legend of the Galactic Heroes follows a centuries-long war between the autocratic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance, told through the rivalry of two brilliant young commanders on opposite sides: Reinhard von Lohengramm, a ruthlessly ambitious noble reshaping the Empire from within, and Yang Wenli, a reluctant strategist who would honestly rather be reading history books than fighting. Rather than picking a clear hero, the story treats both systems, and both men, with equal scrutiny, using sweeping space battles as the backdrop for deep questions about power, democracy, and whether either side truly deserves to win.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is based on Yoshiki Tanaka's novel series and was adapted into a landmark OVA by Artland, released across 110 episodes from 1988 to 1997. It is considered one of the towering achievements of the space opera genre in anime, celebrated for its dense political drama, morally gray leads, and unusually mature, literary approach to science fiction. Despite its age and lack of flashy modern animation, it remains highly influential and is regularly cited by creators and critics as essential viewing, having also inspired later adaptations, including a 2018 remake series covering the same core story.
