Synopsis

Kaiji Itou is broke, aimless, and stupid enough to have co-signed a loan for a friend who vanished, which lands him on a ship where debtors gamble for a chance at clearing everything. The games are rigged in ways that are only visible if you think much harder than anyone expects a desperate person to think, and Kaiji's survival depends entirely on spotting the mechanism before it closes on him. Every victory is followed immediately by a worse situation, because he cannot stop. Every game is designed by someone who understands exactly how he thinks.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Nobuyuki Fukumoto's manga by Madhouse, Kaiji is a landmark of the gambling and psychological thriller genre, known for its extremely distinctive art style, its narrator's escalating hysteria, and games whose rules reward genuine strategic insight. Its portrayal of debt, class exploitation, and the machinery designed to keep desperate people desperate gives it real thematic teeth beneath the tension. The series remains one of the most frequently recommended entries in its genre, alongside Fukumoto's related work Akagi. Its games reward viewers willing to work out the mechanism alongside the protagonist.
