Story
Synopsis
In an alternate industrial revolution era, the island nation of Hinomoto is ravaged by the Kabane, aggressive undead monsters with iron-plated glowing hearts that can only be slain by piercing their cores. Young steam blacksmith Ikoma designs a high-pressure piercing gun to combat the threat. When his home settlement of Aragane Station is overrun by a hijacked armored train, Ikoma is bitten by a zombie. Using brass collars to halt the viral infection from reaching his brain, Ikoma transforms into a Kabaneri, an immortal human with a Kabane body, joining warrior girl Mumei aboard the Kotetsujyo train.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Ikoma and Mumei face intense prejudice from panicked human passengers and samurai leaders, who view them as dangerous monsters that should be executed. However, during a desperate siege at a collapsed mountain railway tunnel, Ikoma uses his piercing gun and superhuman physical durability to defeat an aggressive Wazatori combat zombie. Demonstrating unwavering selflessness to protect Ayame and the refugees, Ikoma earns the passengers' trust. As the Kotetsujyo steams forward toward the shogun capital, Ikoma and Mumei forge a mutual pact to survive together and reclaim their humanity from the undead hordes.
