Gon Freecss sets out to become a licensed Hunter, following in the footsteps of the father who abandoned him as a baby, and along the way befriends Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio during a grueling exam designed to weed out anyone unqualified for the profession's dangers. What begins as a straightforward adventure quickly deepens into explorations of morality, ambition, and what people are capable of under pressure, as the group faces increasingly complex trials ranging from survival games to full-blown political intrigue. Gon's earnest determination anchors a story that keeps expanding in scope and darkness.

Adapted from Yoshihiro Togashi's manga, this 1999 Nippon Animation version of Hunter x Hunter is often cited by longtime fans as a beloved, if unfinished, take on the source material, later succeeded by a more complete 2011 Madhouse remake. Despite ending abruptly due to the original run's limited episode count, it's remembered fondly for its charm and faithful early adaptation of Togashi's distinct blend of adventure and psychological depth. It remains a point of nostalgic debate among fans over which version handles specific arcs best.
About as good as it gets in this genre. Drop a star if you do not care for shows with a lot of fighting, really detest the first arc's tone, or cannot take the length.
