Story

Synopsis

Gon Freecss wants to become a licensed Hunter, mostly so he can track down his absent father, Ging, a legendary Hunter who vanished long ago. Along the way he befriends Killua, a former child assassin, Kurapika, driven by a vow of revenge, and Leorio, chasing wealth for deeply personal reasons. What starts as an adventurous shonen romp about a brutal qualifying exam gradually deepens into something much darker and more sophisticated, especially once the story reaches the Chimera Ant arc, widely considered one of anime's finest and most philosophically brutal storylines. Charming, then devastating: that is Hunter x Hunter's whole trick.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Hunter x Hunter (2011) is Studio Madhouse's second anime adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi's manga, made after an earlier 1999 version, and it follows the source material far more faithfully and darkly across 148 episodes. It ran from 2011 to 2014 and is now considered by many fans and critics to be one of the best shonen anime ever made, praised especially for the Chimera Ant arc's willingness to sit with genuine horror and moral complexity. Togashi's frequent hiatuses have left the manga unfinished for long stretches, but this anime remains the definitive way most fans experience the story.

★★★★★4.5 / 5
I've been watching this anime for probably a very long time. And one of the things I really, really like about it is that it has this very emotional nostalgia around it. But I kind of think this anime could do better in terms of where it's stuck right now. I mean, the entire show is on hiatus, and I have no idea when it's coming back, if it's coming back soon or not at all. But I really love the storytelling of this anime, and how child-centric it is, how powerful the story is.
It also reminds me of One Piece at some point, because it has this dream where a son is looking for his father, and there's a whole journey built around it where everybody goes on their own path. There's passion. There's challenge. There's politics. It has a lot of elements that feel inspired from real life. And at the same time, I feel it's very strange, strange in a way that, at the crux of it, we, as human beings in society, are all hunters. We're all looking for something to have an adventure with. And that's it. That's pretty much it.
