Synopsis

Directed by Atsuko Ishizuka, this coming-of-age adventure follows high school outcasts Roma Kamogawa and Hokuto Toto Mitarai, who call their two-person secret treehouse club the Don Glees. Over the summer, they are joined by Drop, an eccentric teenage boy who recently returned from Iceland. After their amateur fireworks display accidentally coincides with a raging mountain forest fire, the trio is blamed by local townsfolk for causing the destruction. Desperate to prove their innocence, the boys set off into the deep wilderness to retrieve a lost aerial drone whose video camera recorded the truth.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The trek through the mountains pushes the boys through hypothermia, rushing rivers, and exhaustion. Drop reveals he suffers from terminal heart disease and came to Japan to search for the golden phone booth he once saw in Iceland. The boys recover the drone and clear their names, but Drop's condition deteriorates rapidly, and he passes away peacefully in the hospital. Grieving but inspired by Drop's fearless spirit, Roma and Toto travel across the globe to Iceland, locating the red phone booth on a cliffside and discovering a heartfelt message left by Drop.
