Synopsis
Gintama has always mixed absurd comedy with surprisingly heavy plotting, and this stretch leans hard into the heavy side. Gintoki and the Yorozuya crew get pulled into a plot to assassinate the shogun, forcing old rivals and allies to team up against a conspiracy that threatens all of Edo. From there, tensions with the alien Harusame pirates boil over into a decisive clash on the remote island of Rakuyou, where old wounds resurface and the show's larger mythology, the shadowy Tendoshu and the enigmatic villain Utsuro, finally starts coming into focus. Funny as ever, but the blade edges get sharper here.

Gintama° is the third numbered television season of the Gintama anime, based on Hideaki Sorachi's manga and produced by Bandai Namco Pictures (formerly Sunrise), airing in 2015 and 2016. It adapts the Shogun Assassination arc and the Rakuyou Decisive Battle arc, both considered major turning points that shift the series from episodic gag comedy toward its long-simmering endgame. Gintama's unusual ability to swing between slapstick parody and genuinely dark, high-stakes storytelling within the same episode is a big part of why it has remained a beloved cult favorite across its many seasons and specials.
