Toei Animation produced this nostalgic fifty-four-minute science-fiction theatrical featurette, released across Japanese theaters in March 1998. Directed by Kounosuke Uda and based on the continuation manga created by master artist Leiji Matsumoto, the movie commemorated the iconic franchise's twentieth anniversary. The production utilized modernized digital cel coloring and computer-generated space sequences while preserving Matsumoto's distinctive romantic space-opera aesthetic. Featuring beloved vocal performances from Masako Nozawa as Tetsuro and Masako Ikeda as Maetel, alongside an evocative theme song performed by rock band THE ALFEE, the film delighted generations of Matsumoto fans.
