Story

Synopsis

In a quiet coastal town on the day of the annual summer fireworks festival, junior high student Norimichi Shimada and his friends debate whether exploding fireworks look round or flat when viewed from the side. Meanwhile, their beautiful classmate Nazuna Oikawa struggles with her mother's sudden remarriage and forced relocation. Picking up a luminous glass sphere along the shore, Nazuna challenges Norimichi to a swimming duel and invites him to elope. When their initial escape ends in heartbreak, Norimichi hurls the magical orb in frustration, reversing time to rewrite their bittersweet romantic destiny.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio Shaft produced this poignant romantic science-fiction anime film, released across Japanese theaters in August 2017 by TOHO. Directed by Nobuyuki Takeuchi with Akiyuki Shinbo serving as chief director, the movie adapted Shunji Iwai's celebrated 1993 live-action television drama. Screenwriter Hitoshi One updated the nostalgic summer romance with speculative time-loop mechanics, complemented by Akio Watanabe's distinctive character designs. The film's chart-topping theme song, *Uchiage Hanabi* performed by DAOKO and Kenshi Yonezu, became a massive global sensation, accumulating hundreds of millions of music streams and boosting the feature's international box office.
