Synopsis

Goku learns he is a Saiyan, an alien warrior sent to Earth as an infant, and that revelation opens the series into escalating conflicts against invaders, tyrants, artificial humans, and eventually a creature capable of erasing planets. Each arc raises the ceiling of what strength means, introduces transformations that redefine the scale, and eventually kills most of the cast at least once. The formula of training, defeat, and dramatic return became the template that essentially all subsequent shonen action would work from. Every arc raises the ceiling until the previous villain looks almost harmless.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Akira Toriyama's manga by Toei Animation, Dragon Ball Z is among the most globally influential anime ever produced, responsible for introducing enormous international audiences to the medium and for codifying the power escalation structure that defines modern shonen action. Its cultural footprint extends across generations and continents, particularly in Latin America, Europe, and North America. Toriyama's character design work influenced not only manga but the entire Japanese video game industry, making the franchise's reach genuinely difficult to overstate. Its power escalation structure became the default template for the genre.
