A lonely girl journeys into the subterranean underworld.
Synopsis
Directed by Makoto Shinkai, this lush mythological fantasy centers on Asuna Watase, a resourceful middle school girl living in an isolated mountain village following her father's death. Spending her afternoons listening to strange, enchanting melodies on a homemade crystal radio gifted by her father, Asuna is rescued from a monstrous beast by an enigmatic boy named Shun, who claims to hail from the underground realm of Agartha. When Shun mysteriously dies, Asuna's substitute teacher, Mr. Morisaki, reveals that Agartha holds the gate to the land of the dead, where lost souls can be resurrected.

A mixture of spectacular scenery and imaginative supernatural beings, but a pretty conventional philosophical approach to its subject in the end, and a more conventional heroine than I would have liked as well. Still, not a bad journey overall, and even the desolate places look beautiful.
