Story

Synopsis

During a multinational joint military exercise on Oahu Island in Hawaii, elite American pilot Lewis Smith and stoic Japanese soldier Isami Ao clash over piloting philosophies. Their routine drill turns into a desperate slaughter when hostile alien robotic swarms suddenly descend from space, obliterating terrestrial armed forces. Just as Isami faces certain annihilation, a flamboyant, sentient robotic colossus named Bravern drops from the clouds. Bravern forces a traumatized, utterly baffled Isami into his cockpit, blasting heroic anime theme music from internal stereo speakers while slicing alien invaders into scrap in an explosion of unstoppable courage.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
CygamesPictures animated this wildly entertaining original twelve-episode mecha series, which aired in winter 2024. Renowned animator and director Masami Obari helmed the production, infusing the show with his signature dynamic mecha posing, known widely as the Obari pose. Scripted by Keigo Koyanagi, the series went viral internationally following its shocking premiere, which masterfully disguised itself as a gritty military sci-fi drama before exploding into an affectionate, hilarious parody of classic 1980s super robot anime. The dynamic between the neurotic Isami and the relentlessly theatrical Bravern earned enthusiastic praise across the global anime community.
