About the studio
TBS started May 17, 1951 as Radio Tokyo, added television in 1955, and became Tokyo Broadcasting System in 1960, making it Japan's first commercial broadcaster. Based in Akasaka, Minato, Tokyo, TBS has spent over 70 years as one of the country's major networks, broadcasting anime alongside dramas and variety shows, and occasionally joining production committees to help finance the shows it airs. *Being first at anything in broadcasting means you basically wrote the rulebook everyone else followed.* It now operates under the holding company TBS Holdings. While TBS isn't as singularly associated with anime as networks like TV Tokyo, its scale and history make it one of the foundational pillars of Japanese television that anime has relied on for broadcast access for decades. Being the original commercial broadcaster in a country that would go on to build one of the world's biggest entertainment industries is a pretty significant legacy to carry.
