Synopsis

Dai Miyamoto hears jazz for the first time and becomes instantly, obsessively determined to master the saxophone, despite starting years behind more experienced musicians. Alongside his talented pianist friend Yukinori and a self-taught drummer named Shunji, he forms a trio chasing a spot in Tokyo's competitive jazz club scene, driven by sheer passion rather than natural talent alone. The film captures the grind of practice, the thrill of performance, and the specific joy of watching someone improve through pure stubborn effort. Every rehearsal scene doubles as a lesson in what real dedication actually costs.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Shinichi Ishizuka's manga, Blue Giant stands out for its unusually committed approach to musical performance, using genuinely composed jazz pieces and expressive, almost impressionistic animation during its concert sequences rather than treating music as background texture. Produced by NUT and directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, the film earned strong critical praise for making live jazz performance feel viscerally exciting on screen, a rare achievement for animation. It's frequently recommended even to viewers who don't typically watch anime, purely on the strength of its music-driven storytelling.
