Story
Synopsis
Maomao is back in the inner palace, once again balancing her role as attendant to Consort Gyokuyou through a second pregnancy with her true passion: sniffing out poisons, murder plots, and every strange coincidence nobody else seems to notice. A merchant caravan's arrival kicks off a fresh wave of intrigue, hidden toxins tucked inside luxury goods, unexplained deaths, and tensions simmering just beneath the palace's polished surface. As always, Maomao solves it all with sharp deduction and an unfortunate personal fondness for poison, while her prickly, complicated bond with the beautiful, secretive Jinshi keeps quietly deepening in the background.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, known in English as The Apothecary Diaries, is based on Natsu Hyuuga's light novel series, animated by TOHO animation STUDIO and OLM, with its second season airing from January to July 2025. The franchise combines mystery-of-the-week palace intrigue with slow-burn romance and richly researched historical detail, and it has drawn strong comparisons to shows like Detective Conan for its puzzle-box plotting. Season 2 was well received for deepening Maomao and Jinshi's relationship while raising the political stakes, and a further sequel season was announced shortly after this season concluded.
