Synopsis

The Republic of San Magnolia claims its war against autonomous enemy drones is being fought entirely by unmanned units with zero casualties. That claim is a lie built on the Eighty-Six, a persecuted minority forcibly conscripted, stripped of legal personhood, and sent to die piloting machines from beyond the border. Vladilena Milizé, a young handler who commands one such unit remotely, refuses to treat them as disposable, and her insistence on knowing their names puts her at odds with everyone around her. The distance between her comfortable city and their battlefield becomes the story's central wound.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Asato Asato's light novels by A-1 Pictures, 86 earned significant critical acclaim for its unflinching handling of institutional racism, propaganda, and the machinery of dehumanization that makes atrocity possible. Its production notably suffered scheduling difficulties that delayed several late episodes, though the finished result was widely praised regardless. The series stands out among mecha anime for treating its war as a political and moral horror rather than a spectacle, and it's frequently recommended as one of the strongest light novel adaptations to emerge in recent years.
