Synopsis
Hodaka Morishima runs away to Tokyo and scrapes by writing for an occult magazine until he meets Hina Amano, a girl who can clear the sky above any spot she prays over. The two turn her ability into a small business, bringing sunshine to weddings and festivals in a city trapped under endless rain. Then the cost of her gift becomes clear, and Hodaka has to decide whether the world's weather matters more than one person, a choice the film treats with far less ambiguity than most would.

Written and directed by Makoto Shinkai following the enormous global success of Your Name, Weathering with You continued his signature combination of luminous background art, weather as emotional metaphor, and RADWIMPS soundtrack. It became one of the highest-grossing Japanese films of its year and was submitted as Japan's Academy Award entry. The film drew particular discussion for its ending, which pointedly rejects the self-sacrificing resolution audiences expected, making it one of Shinkai's more thematically defiant works despite its romantic surface. Its stunning depiction of rain-soaked Tokyo remains among the most beautiful work in his catalogue.
