Synopsis

Hanamichi Sakuragi has been rejected by fifty girls in a row, so when the fifty-first, Haruko Akagi, asks if he likes basketball, he lies and says yes just to get closer to her. Joining the school team with zero actual skill, Sakuragi's massive ego and raw athleticism slowly, hilariously transform into genuine passion for the sport, as he and his teammates chase a spot at the national championship. It is the foundational text for an entire generation of basketball anime and manga, blending broad comedy with genuinely thrilling, hard-fought game sequences.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Slam Dunk is based on Takehiko Inoue's manga, animated by Toei Animation, and aired from 1993 to 1996. It became a defining cultural phenomenon in Japan, widely credited with driving a massive surge in the sport's popularity nationwide during its original run. Decades later it remains one of the most beloved and influential sports manga and anime ever made, its legacy carried forward through the acclaimed 2022 film The First Slam Dunk, which introduced Inoue's characters to an entirely new generation of fans across Asia and beyond.
