Synopsis

Romeo sells himself into servitude to save his family's farm, and is shipped from his Swiss alpine village to Milan to work as a chimney sweep under a cruel master. In the city he meets Alfredo, another boy in the same trade, and together they build a fragile brotherhood among children who have almost nothing. The story deals honestly with child labor, exploitation, and class cruelty in nineteenth-century Europe, while never losing sight of the friendships that make survival bearable for children the world has entirely discarded.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Part of Nippon Animation's long-running World Masterpiece Theater series, which adapted classic Western children's literature for Japanese television across decades, Romeo's Blue Skies is based on a German novel by Lisa Tetzner. The series is frequently cited as one of the finest entries in that tradition, praised for refusing to soften its material for young audiences while remaining genuinely warm. World Masterpiece Theater shaped the childhoods of multiple generations across Japan and Europe, and this entry in particular retains a devoted following for its emotional honesty about poverty and friendship.
