Directed by Katsuhiko Nishijima and animated by studio APPP in collaboration with Soeishinsha, *Project A-Ko* debuted in Japanese theaters in June 1986. Originally planned as an episode for the *Cream Lemon* anthology, the production evolved into a stand-alone theatrical parody lampooning iconic eighties anime including *Macross*, *Gundam*, *Fist of the North Star*, and *Superman*. Celebrated by international fans for Yuji Moriyama's dynamic character animation and exhilarating slapstick action, the film became an early home video hit in Western markets, launching three direct sequels and establishing a lasting cult following.
