Story

Synopsis

Idol is a short, dazzlingly animated music video built around YOASOBI's song of the same name, used as the opening theme for [Oshi no Ko]. It follows idol Ai Hoshino through a whirlwind of stage lights, choreography, and manufactured perfection, visually distilling the show's central question into three minutes: how much of a star's smile is genuine, and how much is performance? Even divorced from the full series, it works as a standalone burst of style, catchy enough to have become a genuine cultural phenomenon on its own, well beyond the anime it introduces.

Idol was produced by Doga Kobo and released in April 2023 as the opening credits sequence for [Oshi no Ko], with music and lyrics by YOASOBI's Ayase and vocals from Ikura. The song became an enormous crossover hit, topping charts in Japan and drawing tens of millions of views internationally, credited with significantly boosting the anime's own visibility ahead of its full broadcast. Its lyrics, built around the tension between an idol's curated public image and hidden private self, mirror [Oshi no Ko]'s own themes about the entertainment industry, making it one of the rare anime openings that became a standalone hit in its own right.
