Story

Synopsis

Romance Dawn Story is a special retelling of Oda's very first Romance Dawn one-shot, the prototype that eventually became One Piece. When the crew runs out of food, Luffy drifts off alone on the Mini Merry and washes up on an unfamiliar island. There he meets Silk, a girl who mistakes him for one of the pirates threatening her town, led by the villainous Crescent-Moon Gally. Luffy, being Luffy, promises to help her fight back. It is a charming alternate-flavored adventure that nods to the franchise's earliest DNA, sprinkled with the warmth, humor, and reckless heroism that made the original concept blossom into a phenomenon.

Romance Dawn Story is a special produced by Toei Animation and released in 2008, adapting the first version of Eiichiro Oda's Romance Dawn, the pilot one-shot he drew before One Piece officially began. Cleverly, this version places the tale after the Thriller Bark arc, so the full nine-member Straw Hat crew appears, even though the original one-shot starred only Luffy. That makes it a fun blend of old and new: a throwback story reworked to fit the crew fans know and love. Non-canon but rich with history, it is a lovely little tribute to where the entire saga first sprang from.
