Synopsis

The Straw Hats catch wind of a famous final performance by Randolph, a former Marine turned beloved stage actor, and decide to check out his theater ship. When three of his actors quit, Luffy and the gang cheerfully step in to fill the roles. But there is real pain beneath the greasepaint: Randolph lost his family to pirates as a child and has performed for years to comfort others who share that grief. Then a vengeful Marine commander, an old subordinate of Randolph's, sails in on a false charge to settle a score. Luffy must protect the ship, save Randolph, and prove not all pirates are monsters.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Protect! The Last Great Performance is the third One Piece television special, produced by Toei Animation and aired in 2003, after episode 174. Its story is loosely placed around the Long Ring Long Land period of the anime. Like the other TV specials, it is an anime-original, non-canon tale that stands apart from Eiichiro Oda's manga. What makes it memorable is its theme: a genuinely bittersweet story about grief, forgiveness, and the way pirates are judged, wrapped in the fun of watching the Straw Hats ham it up on stage. It is a warm, self-contained one-off that leans into One Piece's softer, more emotional side.
