Synopsis

This end-of-year special drops the Straw Hats into a wild alternate reality: an Edo-flavored version of 19th-century Japan called the Grand Jipangu. Here, Luffy and Usopp are crime-fighting detectives, Nami and Sanji run a restaurant, Zoro is a wandering monk, and Chopper is the town doctor. The story splits into two halves: first, Buggy the Clown and his family terrorize the town by seizing shops, forcing Detective Luffy to step in. Then a mysterious wounded girl named Vivi turns up, and Buggy comes hunting for her secret. It is pure comedic what-if fun, gleefully reshuffling the whole cast into period-drama roles for a one-off adventure.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The Detective Memoirs of Chief Straw Hat Luffy is the fourth One Piece television special, produced by Toei Animation and aired in 2005. It cannot be placed anywhere in the anime's actual timeline, because it is a full-on alternate-universe story rather than ordinary filler, an affectionate riff on the classic Japanese period-detective genre. Non-canon and proudly so, it exists purely to let the cast play dress-up in new roles. Fans enjoy spotting familiar faces recast as monks, cooks, and lawmen. It is the kind of playful experiment a long-running series can afford to make once in a while, purely to entertain its audience.
