Synopsis

3D2Y fills a gap in the two-year timeskip, the period after the war at Marineford when Luffy trained in secret before reuniting his crew. Still raw from losing his brother Ace, Luffy crosses paths with Byrnndi World, a monstrous pirate who escaped the world's greatest prison and now threatens innocent lives. Setting aside his grief, Luffy resolves to grow stronger and protect others, embodying the promise he made after his brother's death. It is an original special that dramatizes an unseen stretch of the story, blending mourning with resolve as Luffy takes his first steps toward becoming the pirate his friends will need.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
3D2Y: Overcoming Ace's Death! Luffy's Vow to His Friends is a One Piece television special produced by Toei Animation and aired in 2014. Its title references the famous 3D2Y message Luffy left as a signal to his crew, meaning not three days but two years until they would regroup. Set during the otherwise unshown timeskip, it is an anime-original story and therefore non-canon, but it cleverly slots into a beloved gap in the timeline. For fans still aching over the Marineford tragedy, it offers a satisfying, emotional bridge, showing how a broken Luffy began channeling his loss into the strength that would define the series' second half.
