Sentimental nostalgia rarely comes so mawkishly kitsch; despite moments of elegance, No. 7 Cherry Lane suffers from narcotised sluggishness and physically inert animation.

No.7 Cherry Lane
Jiyuantai Qihao · 繼園臺七號 · 2020
Passionate desire and politics entangle three souls in turbulent sixties Hong Kong.
Synopsis
Set against the volatile backdrop of the 1967 Hong Kong anti-colonial riots, university student Ziming takes a tutoring position teaching English to beautiful teenager Meiling. Visiting her secluded colonial apartment on Cherry Lane, Ziming finds himself equally infatuated with Meiling and her glamorous, self-exiled mother Mrs. Yu, a sophisticated woman harboring deep nostalgia for classical Chinese culture and French cinema. As violent political demonstrations escalate in the city streets below, the trio retreats into an intoxicating private world of erotic yearnings, literary musings, and melancholic daydreams exploring identity, longing, and cultural transformation.
