Synopsis

The Medicine Seller arrives at the Ooku, the shogun's inner palace, where two young women are entering service on the same day and a spirit has begun killing. Exorcising a mononoke requires learning its Form, Truth, and Reason, and uncovering those means excavating what the palace's rigid hierarchy has done to the women trapped inside it. The film's culprit turns out to be less an individual than the entire system of obligation, disposal, and enforced silence that the Ooku runs on. Every answer implicates the institution rather than any single individual within it.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Written and directed by Kenji Nakamura, this film revives the acclaimed 2007 Mononoke television series after a seventeen-year gap, opening a planned trilogy. Its radically stylized visual approach, drawing on woodblock print aesthetics with flat colors, textured overlays, and deliberately unconventional framing, remains unlike anything else in contemporary animation. The franchise consistently locates the source of its supernatural horror in the injustices inflicted on women within rigid social structures, and this film applies that lens directly to the Ooku itself. Its long-delayed revival was welcomed enthusiastically by the original series' devoted following.
