Synopsis

In this landmark wartime feature, anthropomorphic animal recruits, including a monkey, a puppy, a pheasant, and a bear, complete rigorous military flight training at the foot of Mount Fuji. Commanded by the legendary folk hero Momotaro, the disciplined squadron departs for an advanced tropical naval base in the South Pacific. The animal soldiers construct jungle airfields, sing educational marching songs, and prepare parachutes for a decisive tactical assault against devilish foreign forces on an island fortress. Combining gentle children's folklore with strict military doctrine, the narrative showcases aerial coordination and naval paratrooper efficiency.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Shochiku Animation Institute produced this historic seventy-four-minute feature directed by Mitsuyo Seo, which premiered in Japanese theaters in April 1945. Commissioned directly by the Ministry of the Navy as wartime propaganda, the film holds monumental historical significance as Japan's first full-length animated feature film. Seo utilized multiplane camera techniques and dynamic musical pacing, heavily inspired by Disney's *Fantasia*. Miraculously surviving post-war film destruction, the movie was restored by Shochiku and screened at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, preserving an essential foundational relic of anime production history.
