Synopsis

In 1920s Tokyo, an impoverished twelve-year-old orphan named Midori is left utterly alone after her ailing mother dies. Desperate for shelter, she seeks out a mysterious benefactor, only to be trapped inside Aka Neko Za, a grotesque traveling carnival freak show. Midori is subjected to relentless domestic cruelty, psychological degradation, and abuse by deformed performers. Her bleak existence shifts when Wonder Masamitsu, a diminutive master illusionist, joins the troupe. Using terrifying occult stage magic, Masamitsu asserts control over the carnival, offering Midori protective romance, though their bizarre sanctuary quickly spirals toward horrific catastrophe.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Underground animator Hiroshi Harada directed, wrote, and independently animated this legendary erotic-grotesque cult classic over a five-year period, completing it in 1992. Adapting the controversial 1984 gekiga manga by Suehiro Maruo, Harada hand-painted thousands of animation cels entirely by himself after mainstream studios rejected the project. Due to its disturbing themes and graphic content, Japanese authorities heavily censored the film, leading to confiscated prints and clandestine screenings under carnival tents. Despite its forbidden status, the film remains an internationally renowned masterpiece of Japanese counterculture animation and avant-garde art.
