Story

Synopsis

This OVA continues the 1999 series' story into the Yorknew City arc, where Gon and Killua chase auction money while Kurapika finally comes face to face with the Phantom Troupe, the group responsible for slaughtering his entire clan. Kurapika's revenge quest takes over the narrative, replacing adventure with something colder and considerably more dangerous, as he uses his own life as collateral against opponents who outclass him. The arc's tension comes from watching a normally measured character pursue vengeance at any cost to himself. Every confrontation with the Troupe raises the cost of his revenge further.

Produced by Nippon Animation as a direct continuation of the 1999 Hunter x Hunter television series, this OVA adapted material the broadcast run never reached, based on Yoshihiro Togashi's manga. The Yorknew arc is widely considered one of the manga's finest stretches, and this version remains beloved by fans of the original adaptation despite the later 2011 Madhouse remake covering the same ground. Debate over which version handles the arc better is a long-running fixture of Hunter x Hunter fandom discussion, with each having devoted defenders.
