Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor

Independent auteur Koji Yamamura written, designed, animated, and directed this extraordinary twenty-minute surrealist masterwork, released by Shochiku in October 2007. Adapting Franz Kafka's celebrated 1919 psychological short story *A Country Doctor*, Yamamura utilized hand-drawn pencil drawings, distorted wide-angle perspective shifts, and expressionistic warping to visualize Kafka's claustrophobic existential dread. The film featured theatrical voice acting by traditional Japanese kyogen performers from the Shigeyama family. Winning prestigious grand prizes at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and Stuttgart Animation Festival, the short stands as a crowning achievement of world animation.
