Story
Synopsis
A company begins broadcasting the smells and sounds of the Showa era, and adults across Japan abandon their families to live permanently inside a recreated version of their own childhoods. Shin-chan's parents are among them, leaving the children to mount a rescue against an organization whose entire ideology is that the past was better and the future is not worth having. The film builds toward a confrontation about whether growing up and moving forward has any value at all. Every argument the film makes about the future is delivered through a five-year-old.

Directed by Keiichi Hara, The Adult Empire Strikes Back is widely regarded as the finest entry in the enormous Crayon Shin-chan film series and as one of the most unexpectedly profound family films in anime. Its treatment of nostalgia as a genuinely dangerous force, and its extended sequence of Hiroshi Nohara recalling his own life through smell, are frequently cited as among the most moving material in Japanese animation. The film substantially exceeded expectations for a franchise built on crude children's comedy. Its emotional reputation now considerably exceeds that of the franchise it belongs to.
