Synopsis

The final chapter of the Washio Sumi trilogy opens on Gin Minowa's funeral, with her classmates grieving and her younger brother screaming at the Shinju for allowing it. Sumi's rage carries her into battle against the Vertex, and the aftermath forces the surviving girls to confront what the hero system actually is: a mechanism that consumes children and calls the consumption necessary. The film introduces Mankai and its terrible cost, and closes by bridging directly into the story that follows years later. Every revelation makes the earlier films' cheerfulness look considerably more sinister.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The concluding film in the Washio Sumi's Chapter trilogy, adapted from the light novel Washio Sumi is a Hero, this entry released in July 2017 as a prequel to Yuki Yuna is a Hero. The franchise built its reputation on presenting itself as a cheerful magical girl series before revealing a system that deliberately destroys its protagonists, drawing frequent comparison to Madoka Magica. This trilogy provides the backstory that recontextualizes the original series entirely, and it is generally considered the franchise's bleakest material. Its bleakness recontextualizes the entire franchise for anyone watching in release order.
