⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - Shin Jidai no Tobira, released internationally as Beginning of a New Era, is a theatrical film based on Cygames' Uma Musume Pretty Derby franchise, produced by P.A. Works and Kadokawa's animation studio, and premiered in Japanese theaters in May 2024. Like the rest of the franchise, it dramatizes real Japanese racehorses as anthropomorphized athlete characters, blending genuine racing history and statistics with earnest sports storytelling. The film was produced to expand the franchise's roster of central characters, introducing figures who would carry forward into subsequent Uma Musume anime and games.
The more you know about the real-world events the film adapts, the better it gets. And frankly, I've had as much fun researching what really happened as I did watching the film.
